What’s the story?
[3 min read]
Typography is everywhere we look. It’s in the books we read, on the websites we visit, even in everyday life.
In 2021, Fauzi Yusoff had conducted Type in Motion subject. The subject consists of 67 students from 3 classes @ Tuanku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC).
The 7 week intensive online learning lesson consists of research and execution. The assessments were divided into 3 main section:
A1: Typography Poster
On this first assignment, students were able to implement the basic understanding of the art of typography into a form of composition. The execution were focusing on “quote of the day” as the main concept.
With typography as the main element of design, students must apply a suitable font style and approach based on the proposed phrase design. The ability to transfer the graphical style from typography into a composition is one of the most fundamental and important aspects in creating a good typography piece. Below is the TOP 5 of my best student’s works:
A2: Kinetic Typography
On the second project, students are required to create an animation based on the A1 Typography Poster
At the end of the A2: Kinetic Typography, student will be able to:
- Demonstrate effective use of typography to reinforce a visual message.
- Demonstrate an understanding of typographical hierarchy.
- Demonstrate effective use of fonts and composition to convey information.
- Demonstrate understanding of typography composition.
A3: Lyrics video
In the final project, students are required to create a lyrical music video based on their song selection. Students are required to produce typography composition, animation transition and audio visual editing.
At the end of the A3: Lyrics Video, student will be able to:
- Demonstrate effective use of typography into sequence layers.
- Demonstrate an understanding of audio editing
- Demonstrate effective use of typography into sequence transitions.
- Demonstrate understanding of motion compositing.
Kinetic typography is a diverse visual story-telling technique to tell almost any story in the most fascinating way to catch viewer’s attention. After the 7 weeks of intensive online learning lesson & critiques; here’s one of my best student’s works, Kidmann Tan:
In essence, typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the text visually appealing to the reader. Through this module, students were able to understand the fundamentals of typography which specifically focused on the creativity of font style, appearance, and composition.
From the still graphics to kinetic typography, students were able to create a narrative storyline for the reader to read the contents as a type in motion.
