In 2019, Fauzi Yusoff had conducted Creative & Critical Thinking class. The subject were enrolled by 70 students from Tuanku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC).

“The keyword to focus is to balance your left brain and your right brain.” – FY

What is Critical Thinking?

Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.

Critical thinking is self-guided, self-disciplined thinking which attempts to reason at the highest level of quality in a fair-minded way. People who think critically consistently attempt to live rationally, reasonably & empathically.

Why Critical Thinking?

Critical thinking is self-guided, self-disciplined thinking which attempts to reason at the highest level of quality in a fair-minded way. People who think critically consistently attempt to live rationally, reasonably, empathically.

The Problem
Everyone thinks; it is our nature to do so. But much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed or down-right prejudiced. Yet the quality of our life and that of what we produce, make, or build depends precisely on the quality of our thought.

Definition
Critical thinking
is that mode of thinking – about any subject, content, or problem – in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them.

The Process

Critical Thinking is a technique that been use as a way finding method to find the best solutions for a specific case study.

On this specific project, the main title is ‘The Wonder of Words & Visuals’. The ideas is to find a common connection in between the similarity and opposite of “Fact & Content”, “This & That”, “Before & After” & “Question & Answer”.

Students were given a task to create a digital narrative storytelling using a specific format and visualize it into social media ads format. Starting from brainstorming the idea, the main points about the current social media trends had been developed into a narrative storytelling.

Some parts of student’s idea & brainstorming about Social Media trending culture.

Based on the brainstorming session, students were instructed to develop the points into a narrative storytelling into an article. They have to highlight and identify the point of words which consists of the FACT & CONTENT, the BEFORE & AFTER, the THIS & THAT, the QUESTION & ANSWER:

Narrative story-telling template

The Development

The next process is to identify the data and translate it into a form of formula. In order to make this project systematic & organized, a specific formula were created to synchronize the workflows.

Within the 7 weeks. The formula had been divided into 7 section in order for students to complete the task until the final process. From brainstorming to articles, then scripts into storyboards, students were assigned to constructs a 60 second video campaigns about their topic & trends into their own social media platforms. They were required to get comments & feedbacks from their target audience as a data collection in order to understand about their target market.

This is the workflow structure of the project that had been cluster into sections for a better communication in between 70 students using Google Classroom.

“Based on our group opinion, we think that timeline is the most important thing on this subject. Before we really understand about the timeline, Mr Fauzi had created a template for us. This made things become more easier for us. That was a very complete template. Inside the template, there is a thumbnail, a timeline label and a storyline form.”— Taken from student’s report

“We had learn a lot from the timeline template. One of our favorite were fact and content. It can help us brainstorming when we were running out of ideas, it was a good guideline to lead us to create contents. Besides that, we realize once we understand our own works, then only we can influence people to understand it.

Left brain and right brain will become more balance, therefore our logical thinking and creativity is well-balanced. Finally, we also learnt how to cooperate with each members’ idea as one team, there is always need a leader to finalize each members valuable suggestion.— Taken from student’s report

The Conclusion

“We were failing countless time because we were not following the process and kept on rejected by Mr. Fauzi. We’ve tried to follow the order as much as possible and finally we got it right. By then now we understand, why Mr. Fauzi always says:

“It’s not about your work, it’s all about how you work.”

Now we understand that process is important. If we just follow the instruction we just might save a lot of time. Anyone can create interesting content and wonderful videos but without a planning, we might drag the process and it might become messy especially when working on group assignment.”

“As conclusion, we wish to have more time to learn on this subject but the time is limited to us. We hoped that we will learn more about these shortcuts in the following semester.” — Taken from student’s report
