Summary:

VGAV Digital Gallery @Agenda Lokalism is an immersive digital exhibition initiative developed for TM, highlighting local digital artist that use innovation through motion graphics, digital content, and interactive visual experiences.

The exhibition featured a collection of digital artworks and animations created by local digital artists, showcasing their interpretation of Malaysian culture through contemporary digital media.

A proud milestone for the project, VGAV Digital Gallery was officially launched by Malaysia’s 6th Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak. It was an honour and privilege to contribute to an initiative that brought together immersive technology, creative innovation, and national industry development under one platform.

The Mindset Behind the Solution

A case study on how strategic thinking, spatial design, user experience and innovation transformed
a constrained exhibition space into an engaging digital gallery.

Challenge

To create an engaging digital gallery experience within two shipping containers while showcasing multiple digital artworks that would normally require larger exhibition spaces. The exhibition also needed to be portable, allowing it to be relocated and reinstalled at future events.

User Experience

With multiple screens operating simultaneously, uncontrolled audio could have created a distracting environment. Individual headphones were integrated into each display, providing visitors with a personalised listening experience while maintaining a visually open gallery space. The silent visual displays also created curiosity, encouraging visitors to explore and discover the accompanying audio content.

Spatial Thinking

Given complete flexibility over the container space, the exhibition was developed as a contrasting White Box and Black Box Digital Gallery. This approach maximised the limited footprint of two shipping containers while creating distinct viewing environments that enhanced the overall visitor experience.

Innovation

The use of shipping containers was both a practical and strategic response to the client’s requirements. As container-based experiences were gaining popularity at the time, the format provided a distinctive exhibition identity while supporting portability. This allowed the gallery to be efficiently relocated and reinstalled at subsequent events, including exhibitions in Cyberjaya and Penang.

Problem Solving

Most of the participating digital artworks were originally designed for larger display environments. To overcome space limitations, multiple artworks from each artist were curated and consolidated into a single presentation frame, allowing a broader range of content to be featured without compromising the exhibition objectives.

Outcome

The project successfully transformed two shipping containers into an immersive digital gallery experience. Through a combination of spatial thinking, problem solving, user experience design and innovation, the exhibition attracted visitors, increased engagement with local digital artworks and demonstrated how emerging digital media could be adapted into meaningful and accessible public experiences.

Back in 2014, vertical video was still a relatively unfamiliar format. The installation attracted significant attention as visitors were naturally curious about why the display screens were positioned vertically instead of the conventional horizontal orientation.

Using local motifs, cultural elements, and vector-based graphic styles, the artists expressed their creativity through animated visual storytelling, demonstrating how traditional inspirations could be reimagined within a modern digital art context. This fusion of local identity and digital innovation reflected the growing evolution of Malaysia’s creative industry and emerging digital art scene.

Combined with a simple audio-visual setup, the motion graphics and accompanying sound created an engaging experience that encouraged people to stop, observe, and interact with the exhibition. The unusual presentation transformed a basic digital display into a conversation starter and a memorable public engagement piece.

The Conclusion

What began as a challenge to showcase digital artworks within a limited and mobile exhibition environment evolved into an opportunity to rethink how audiences engage with digital content. Through strategic planning, spatial thinking, user experience considerations and innovation, the project transformed two shipping containers into a platform for discovery, interaction and creative expression.

The Agenda Lokalism Digital Gallery not only provided visibility for local digital artists but also demonstrated how thoughtful design decisions can enhance engagement, overcome constraints and create lasting impact. The project serves as an example of how strategy, creativity and technology can work together to deliver meaningful and accessible public experiences. Throughout this exciting project; Fauzi Yusoff and team solved multiple challenges through strategy, spatial thinking, user experience and innovation.
